So Many Questions For Spurs: Can They Answer Them Before It’s Too Late?
Tottenham Hotspur is in such a weird spot. They have a tremendous squad but they're one of the biggest players in the market right now. And the position they're shopping? One that is already filled by two of their players. So why are they looking elsewhere?
Tottenham is going all-in for an attacking midfielder. Despite boasting Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli, Daniel Levy is on the hunt for a world-class attacking midfielder. Over the past few weeks I've seen Spurs linked with:
Bruno Fernandes
Giovani Lo Celso
Coutinho
Paulo Dybala
That's a tremendously talented pool of players. Spurs can't lose by signing any of those players and that isn't news. But why are they shopping an attacking midfielder? Here's what I think.
Christian Eriksen
Imagine leaving Spurs for Manchester United right now. That might be one of the stupidest moves ever. For me, Eriksen is most valuable to the North London Side.
Real Madrid doesn't need him. They have Isco and with Paul Pogba likely to join next summer, I don't think his services would be needed.
As for Manchester United, they could use him but given the current state of the club, Eriksen would be wise to remain a Spurs player.
Maybe Atletico Madrid could be a good fit? They could use a strong attacking midfielder. Just speculating here.
So for Eriksen what does the future hold? We have no idea and that's why Tottenham is in the market for his replacement. But they don't have to be. As I've said before, Dele Alli would be an awesome replacement but can he be relied upon?
Dele
Dele Alli is one of my favorite players. But he has a mountain to climb this season.
How can a player valued at $100 million not be the poster child for Tottenham? It's simple, he struggles to stay healthy. Dele is a versatile midfielder that can play in the center of the pitch or out wide. His services have played a huge role in Tottenham's success under Pochettino but after last season is Dele heading in the wrong direction?
This season is huge for Dele. Can he get healthy and prove that he can be reliable? I sure hope so.
From the outside looking in, Spurs look to be in the market for insurance. Christian Eriksen seems to be pushing for an exit, and his replacement, Dele, has been suffering injury after injury. Smart move by Tottenham if you ask me.
Aurier or Foyth?
While Tottenham has been focused on signing an attacking midfielder, other positions need addressing. For starters, who will play right-back next season? Better yet, what options do Spurs have at striker?
So who will play right-back for Spurs this season? With Kieran Trippier at Atletico Madrid, the position is void. Juan Foyth, Serge Aurier, and Kyle Walker-Peters seem to be the candidates at the moment but who's the best choice?
For me, I think Spurs should move on from Serge Aurier. He was unable to make an impact last season despite the position being up for grabs considering Trippier's struggles. Plus, his rumored return to PSG doesn't help his case at White Hart Lane.
So what about Juan Foyth? Foyth featured in Argentina's Copa America squad this summer but is he ready to be a regular in Pochettino's starting XI? He deserves a shot.
Kyle Walker-Peters
This is the prospect I'm most excited about. Walker-Peters has been linked with a loan move as Spurs may bring in a right-back before the transfer window closes. But if they are unable to do so, is Walker-Peters ready for the challenge? The 22-year-old academy project could be a long-term replacement for Trippier.
Even so, Spurs have been linked with Elseid Hysaj of Napoli and Nice's Youcef Atal according to the Sun. Hysaj is 25 and Atal is 23. Is bringing in a young talent necessary? And if so, how much better are those two players when compared to Walker-Peters and Foyth?
I doubt Spurs sign a right-back but if Aurier does return to PSG, Foyth and Walker-Peters better be ready. Perhaps, bringing in either Hysaj or Atal would be a smart move if Poch wishes to have a solid pool of options at right-back.
Striker
So what about a striker? Yes, Spurs have one of the best strikers in the world in Harry Kane, but he was frequently out with injuries last season. With Fernando Llorente no longer at the club, Kane is the only striker they have.
So who should Spurs pursue? I would say Lukaku but paying anything more than $30 million for him is highway robbery. I was thinking about Mario Mandzukic or perhaps Spurs could pursue Edin Dzeko despite his drive to join Inter Milan. I'm just speculating but Spurs could use a back-up for Kane. Say what you want about Llorente but he was honestly a pretty solid understudy. Even so, Spurs do have enough wingers, and midfielders to form an effective line-up if Kane does pick up an injury.
So what does the future hold for Tottenham Hotspur? It's impossible to tell.
Best Case Scenarios
In a perfect world, Spurs would have sold Eriksen this summer for a huge fee. If he is to leave next year, he will leave on a free and Spurs will have missed out on a massive pay-day.
Dele Alli will remain healthy, and he will return to the form that thrust him into the spotlight just a few years ago.
Either Foyth or Walker-Peters will have a breakout season and provide Spurs with a long-term option at right-back.
Daniel Levy will find Kane an understudy to provide insurance at the striker position.
Will all of the above happen? Hell, maybe none of them will happen but that's why Spurs are shopping.
Would Love to See It
So there's what I HOPE will happen at Tottenham Hotspur. Here's what I would LOVE to happen.
Remember when I wrote about how impressed I was with Dybala's decision to stay in Turin just a few days ago? Well, that still stands but now, Spurs seem to be seriously considering the Argentine.
There are so many things to consider when dealing with Dybala. According to the Guardian, he's earning approximately $365,000 a week at Juventus and he seems unwilling to accept anything less than that at Tottenham. Plus a whopping agent fee and his image rights are up in the air. So is Dybala worth all the trouble? For Spurs, hell yes.
For starters, Mauricio Pochettino is one of the best managers in the world. And… he's Argentine. AND Spurs aren't United. They're a strong squad capable of challenging for the title. For me, it would be smart for Dybala to move to Spurs, dare I say it might even save his career from the utter uncertainty.
Am I going to go on a tangent about Dybala? Absolutely. Here we go.
Do I think Dybala is smart to remain in Turin? Yes, but that's only IF he gets a fair shake and it seems like that may not happen. Ah, the speculation.
So what the hell should Dybala do? In my opinion, he needs to cut the bullshit and move to Spurs. Pochettino has the means to get him back to his best and he'd be surrounded by world-class talent. If Dybala were to join Spurs, that would most likely confirm Eriksen's departure in the near future as well as Tottenham's uncertainty regarding the reliability of Dele.
A move to Spurs for Dybala just seems too perfect for both the player and the club. I doubt it happens but it would be smart for Dybala. Dybala under Pochettino has the makings of something special.
So Spurs will enter this season with a multitude of questions that need answering. Even so, I have no doubt that they will be just fine. Perhaps, they can ink a huge signing before the transfer window slams shut tomorrow. My views on Tottenham have not changed since earlier this summer. I still think they are more than capable of a title-chasing campaign. Even so, they do have the potential to improve their squad. Something that could send them to the next level and pave the way for the future of the club.
