Liverpool or City Title Favorites? Try Tottenham: How Spurs Could Win the Premier League this Upcoming Season
Who do you think will win the Premier League title? I bet you're thinking either Liverpool or Manchester City. Tottenham? Probably not. In recent years we've seen Tottenham let titles evade them regardless of them being right within the clubs grasp. Could history repeat itself this year? It very well could but I don't think it will. Here's why I think Spurs can win the Premier League this upcoming season.
Midfield is Deep as Hell
Outside of Manchester City, Tottenham has the best midfield in the Premier League. I'd argue that Tottenham's midfield is better than Liverpool's. Why? Because it's overflowing with talented players. Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Moussa Sissoko, Harry Winks, Eric Dier, and Victor Wanyama make up that midfield. It seems like manager, Mauricio Pochettino, is the master of bringing the best out of his players.
Remember, Spurs didn't spend at all during last summer's transfer period. Players like Harry Winks and Moussa Sissoko were already on the squad. Due to injuries to players like Dele and Dier, Sissoko and Winks were given opportunities in the starting lineup and they excelled. Now, even with Eriksen possibly on his way out, Tottenham has enough weapons in the midfield to fill that void. Oh, and they just signed one of the hottest young commodities in Europe.
This signing, although it's an excellent one, surprised me. Spurs acquired Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for $73 million. The 22-year-old French international can play as a defensive midfielder but being a stronger runner with the ball makes him an option on the width. Perhaps Pochettino was bracing for an Eriksen exit or the potential for another season in which Eric Dier struggled with injuries. Either way, Tottenham's midfielder just went from sensational to all-world.
Tottenham's depth at the center of the pitch will allow them to construct the perfect line-up against any team they face. This is something that is invaluable. Teams like Manchester United will rely heavily on stars like Paul Pogba considering their lack of depth at CM. On the other hand, Pochettino has the ability to construct a lineup that matches other teams perfectly, or he can force teams to change their lineup to matchup with Spurs. Outside of City and maybe Liverpool, Spurs will have an advantage in every matchup. And it's not even close.
Dele Bounce Back?
I touched on this on a previous piece. Dele is in need of a huge season. His 5 goals and 3 assists in Premier League play is well below his paygrade. There's no reason he shouldn't be hitting double digits in both categories. Despite a sluggish season, I still regard Dele as one of the best young midfielders in Europe. Perhaps the departure of Eriksen could open up opportunities for Dele to further his game. This is merely speculation and regardless of Eriksen's future, Dele needs to have a much better season if Spurs want to have a chance of truly competing for a title.
Trippier Needs to Rediscover
Remember last summer when Trippier was a World Cup standout? Better yet, the best player on an English squad that came insanely close to playing in the Final? Trippier followed up his amazing World Cup campaign with a poor season for Spurs as he played well below the caliber that we saw him play at in Russia. Trippier has been linked with the likes of Napoli and Bayern Munich but I doubt he leaves Spurs.
With no immediate replacement, Spurs would be forced to play a young and inexperienced Kyle Walker-Peters or a 21-year-old Juan Foyth. Perhaps Serge Aurier could step in but he was inconsistent last season and he struggled with injuries. Trippier is in dire need of a bounce-back season. Even if he doesn't reach the same form he was in during the 2018 World Cup, he needs to up his game.
Is this the season in which we see the likes of Juan Foyth or Kyle Walker-Peters? If Trippier plays like he did last season I think yes. But with Tottenham pushing hard for a Premier League title it might not be the right time to experiment with young talent. Even so, Liverpool did and look how that turned out for them.
The Time is Now
So why do I think that Spurs won't choke this year? There's no telling how their season will pan out but this year feels like the best chance they've had in years. In basically every position they have depth and talent. An array of stars supported by a cast of players capable of making an impact when called upon his a recipe for a title run.
Also, Tottenham's center-back pairing may be at its peak. Jan Vertongen and Toby Alderweireld are aging (Vertongen is 32 and Alderweireld is 30). Yes, Tottenham has young talents such as Davison Sanchez but the two Belgian center-backs are one the best pairings in the world. Tottenham needs to take advantage of them before they begin to deteriorate. I think they have at least a few years left but nonetheless, Spurs need to push for a title.
All in all, I think Tottenham is in the perfect position for a title run. The squad is so talented and all eyes will be on Liverpool and Manchester City as another head to head clash for the title will be expected taking the pressure off of Tottenham. Plus, with Arsenal in peril and Chelsea with a minor disadvantage considering the loss of Eden Hazard and a transfer ban, the pool of clubs capable of competing for a title has downsized significantly.
To be honest, I would love to see Harry Kane and Son Heung-Min lift the Premier League trophy. If one thing is for sure, I sure as hell don’t want to see City lift it for a third straight year.
