The USWNT Don't Give A Damn What You Think
Remember the summer of 2015? When the United States dominated Japan in the World Cup Final? Carli Lloyd scored a hat-trick in under 17 minutes one of those goals being a half-field bomb. Now, the year is 2019 and the USWNT is still balling out once again. But now, with the attention of the world firmly in their grasp, the USWNT doesn't really give a damn about what you think.
Unlike the men, the US women's team is the World’s best. Yesterday a 2-1 win against England secured a spot in their 3rd straight World Cup Final. The US now holds the longest world cup winning streak at 11 games. And do you know what the best part of all of this is? The journey has been amazing to watch.
"I'm not going to the fucking white house"
Imagine this being controversial. An openly gay super-star refusing to go to the white house. Hell, I'm a young white male and I wouldn't go. Since when are athletes obligated to go to the White House? And if they refuse to… doesn't that say something about the president and government he presides over? I think so. I not only stand with Megan Rapinoe I love her. She doesn't give a single shit and it gets even better. In their round of 16 game against Spain, she stepped up and scored the US's only two goals and then she did the same against France as the US won that quarterfinal match 2-1. Even if you wanted to attack her and call her a fraud, you simply can't when she's putting the USWNT on her back. Hats off to Megan and I hope she is ready to go for the Final (she said she would be). I recommend reading Sue Birds piece on Megan and the USWNT. Imagine having to argue for equal pay with men when the men can't even qualify for the World cup and you're making your third straight World Cup Final appearance. I can't. I think it's flat out wrong that these women aren't being paid as much, if not more than the men. If you're one of the people that say "have them play the men and then see if they should be paid just as much" you should probably get back to work because tour shift at 7-11 is about to start.
For me, equal pay is not a difficult subject. It's 2019… We've been over this before. It shouldn't still be a problem.
Although the USWNT has won each of their knock-out round games by a single goal, I haven't been worried once. Not even in the slightest. Not even VAR could shake my confidence in the team. Alex Morgan became the first-ever birthday goal-scorer at a women's world cup and Alyssa Naeher stepped up and denied a penalty that would've drawn England level late in the match. She also made an amazing save earlier in the game in which she went full-extension to deny a shot that looks destined for the back of the net. I'll admit I miss Hope Solo, but Naeher showed up big-time yesterday and she played a HUGE part in the US securing their spot in the final.
So what does this mean? What has the USWNT been doing this summer? Balling? Making statements? Not giving a single shit? All of the above.
Tonight, the US men will take on Jamaica in the GoldCup in what will most likely be an exciting semi-final match. Jamaica, a team that failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup will give the USMNT a run for their money. On the other hand, The US women will try and win their second straight WORLD CUP. Let that sink in. And we are still talking about equal pay. Oh, the irony.
