The USMNT running riot in the Gold Cup

The USMNT running riot in the Gold Cup

With two games gone, the United States Men's National team has qualified for the knockout round. The USMNT, led by wonderkid Christian Pulisic, have yet to concede a goal. Although they've played a series of weak teams, their performances have been exactly what all US fans should want to see.

The US has played two teams that didn't even come close to qualifying for the 2018 World Cup. Guyana, and Trinidad and Tobago proved to be no match for the USMNT. The US opened up their 2019 Gold Cup campaign with a 4-0 win against Guyana in which the US had three different goal-scorers. Tyler Boyd netted two goals and Paul Arriola and Gyiasi Zardes each netted one as well. The US walloping Guyana without the help of Pulisic who didn't record a goal or an assist in the match might be minor in the eyes of some, but it speaks volume about the squad and their desire to break from the mold of the 2017 qualifying campaign in which they fell short of the World Cup in Russia.

Every US soccer fan remembers exactly where they were when the US lost to Trinidad and Tobago in 2017. I was huddled in my room with a group of my friends as we streamed the game from a friends phone. We watched in disbelief as the US's chances of qualifying slipped through their fingers. Two years later, the US faced Trinidad in the group stage of the Gold Cup and handed them a 6-0 loss in what was most definitely a statement game. Pulisic netted a goal along with two assists and center-back, Aaron Long, netted two goals as well. Zardes added to his goal tally with two more goals. The US was getting contributions throughout the lineup as Jordan Morris recorded two assists and Ariola netted his second goal of the tournament.

Now, with two games down and a goal differential of +10, the US will take on Panama tonight. Panama qualified for the 2018 World Cup although they didn't win a single game and only netted two goals. The US should be chomping at the bit to play Panama as they are itching to make a statement against a team that took their spot in the 2018 World Cup. Panama has won both of their games in the group stage so far although they've conceded two goals and the US has yet to concede any. Panama will definitely be more of a challenge for the US than their two previous engagements but I'm confident that they will rise to the challenge considering the amount of confident they've played with so far.

So there you have it. The US will wrap up their group stage play tonight against Panama at 8pm. Pulisic has the chance to lead the US into the knockout round as the first place finisher in  Group D. And from there, the sky is the limit.
