De Ligt to Juve? What This Means For Pogba and United
After a carousel of rumors, Matthijs De Ligt has finally picked his future club and it was not what I expected. The 19-year-old Dutch center-back exploded onto the scene this year as he led Ajax to an Edervise title and to the Champions League semi-final. De Ligt is one of the hottest commodities in Europe this summer and he has chosen Juventus as his destination of choice. Now, the Italian giants have acquired the services of one of the best young center-backs in the world and they did it just in time.
Imagine learning under Italian legends Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. The two Italian center-backs are two of the worlds best but their tenures as such will be coming to a close sooner rather than later. Bonnuci is 32 and Chiellini is 34. It's only a matter of time until they are a mere shadow of their once dominant selves. It's a good thing Juventus acquired De Ligt. Although he may not play a huge role in the team next season, he'll be able to learn from two of the worlds most experienced center-backs.
So where does Juventus go from here? Do they splash on Paul Pogba? Strengthening their midfield would certainly help especially if Dybala were to leave this summer. Perhaps a swap deal between Juve and United could be in order? Juventus would definitely benefit from the Frenchman's services and he would be playing with his fellow Frenchman, Blaise Matudi whom he won a world cup with last summer. On the other hand, United would be gambling on Dybala who hasn't quite met expectations of late at Juventus. Perhaps a change of scenery is in order for the Argentinian but is United the right fit? It's impossible to tell but throwing him into a mix of young talents such as Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Jesse Lingard may be just what he needs.
Although Pogba seems open to an exit from United, I'm not entirely convinced that it'll happen. Pogba just recorded his best season of all-time and he was the shining beacon of hope on a team with very little bright spots. United should be keen on locking him down and building around him. Hopefully United can finish up the deal with Aaron Wan-Bissaka who would be a huge signing. The signing of Daniel James adds depth to the United attack and provides the red devils with yet another young and promising talent. Although it doesn't look like United is going to have as big of a summer as Real Madrid in terms of signings. Keeping Pogba, and signing Wan-Bissaka would be steps in the right direction.
So Juventus and Manchester United are two clubs with very different motives right now. Juventus is trying to amass a super team so they can win the Champions League. A feat that's escaped them for years. On the other hand, United is trying to rise from the depths of a series of abysmal seasons and reach their former glory. Both clubs have lasting legacies. It's time to see if the two clubs can obtain their goals.
