Idrissa Gueye to Paris Saint-Germain? How this move impacts both PSG and Everton
Oh boy. Just when Everton was on the cusp of mounting a spectacular season, they lose their most important piece. Defensive midfielder Idrissa Gueye looks like he's on his way to Paris St. Germain
According to goal.com, Everton and Paris St. Germain have agreed on a fee for Gueye which is approximately worth $35 million. I saw this news on twitter and oh man the mentions were something else. Some people had absolutely no idea who he was which apparently translated to him being a nobody. So if you're one of those people. I'll enlighten you.
Idrissa Gueye is a 29-year-old Senegalese midfielder who was a crucial part of Everton's squad this past season. Gueye finished a tackle shy of premier league-leading tackler Wilfred Ndidi last season with 142. Gueye was anything but flashy. He calmy dictated play for Everton and served as their motor.
Gueye was one of my favorite players last season. He exploded onto the Premier League stage as he won tackle after tackle. He was a huge part of Everton's resurgence in the latter half of the season and I believe that he would play an even bigger part in their campaign this upcoming season. With so many young pieces such as Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, it was good to have a veteran player, especially when he was in the center of the pitch dictating play.
Gueye was easily one the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League last season. That's why I'm surprised that they only got about $35 million for him. He's only 29-years-old it's not like's a young star but he's not old either. Know what I mean? Anyways, I'm not going to make this a depressing piece in which I act like Everton is done for now that he's gone. Let's look at what this means for the club moving forward.
Remember earlier this summer when I was like "Everton is a left-winger away from being a dangerously good club?" Well, I do. The possibility of Everton signing David Neres really excited me but that fell through. Now, they are a left-winger and defensive mid-fielder away from being a "dangerously good team". It's close to impossible to replace a player that won 142 tackles in a single season. But Everton did bolster their midfield believe it or not.
Last season, Barcelona cast out Andres Gomes. His landing spot? Everton on loan. Geeze it seems like all the youngsters are having their career's plummet at Barcelona. Nonetheless, Gomes shined at Everton and that's why Everton signed him permanently this summer. Gomes is a solid midfielder that can be used as a box to box option or an attacking one. Can he fill the void left by Gueye? No, but he made it a bit smaller. I like Gomes and I think he will be a big part of the Everton squad this season. Oh and he's only 25. Really good pickup by Everton.
Perhaps we will see more of Tom Davies this year? I hope so but I'm just not sure. The 21-year-old didn't feature for Everton too much towards the end of the season. Regardless, he's a young midfielder who has tremendous potential. When he has played, he's impressed me. I think Davies could be a big part of Everton's squad this season. A great box to box option.
Ah, Fabian Delph. Is it bad that whenever I hear his name I think of a red card? Regardless of my initial reaction to him, I think this a great signing for Everton. He's a player who can add depth and experience to a young squad and that's always a good thing. I bet he features in the center of the pitch primarily as a substitute. Adding an aggressive and energetic player to a team full of young talent will be an interesting dynamic to watch. Also, I think it was a good move for Delph to leave City. Don't get me wrong he's a good player, it's just City is so freakin good. He will get more minutes at Everton.
Obviously, Everton has the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson who will continue to serve as Everton's primary attacking midfielder. The services of Morgan Schneiderlin will probably be called upon a bit more frequently but all in all, I think Everton has a solid pool of players that can make impacts hopefully making Gueye's departure not as big as it seems. Even so, it's incredibly hard to replace a motor like Gueye. Something Everton will need to figure out before the season begins.
So now that we discussed what Gueye's departure means for Everton, let's talk about what his arrival means for PSG.
So Gueye in a PSG uniform. I like it a lot even though he will no longer be in the Premier League. First of all, PSG needed to strengthen their midfield this summer and they've done just that. Adding Herrera on a free, and then Gueye for what I think is a bargain, is great business. Both Gueye and Herrera are 29 meaning that they're in the prime of their careers and either player will be a solid fit alongside Marco Verratti. With Rabiot leaving on a free, Gueye will help fill the void he left.
Even with Gueye and Herrera now at the club, PSG still seems a bit thin at the center of the pitch. Outside of Verratti, Gueye, Herrera, and Julian Draxler PSG don't really have anyone. Perhaps Leandro Paredes can make an impact this season? Or Pablo Sarabia? Maybe. It's a shame that PSG let Giovani Lo Celso go. Does PSG have enough talent at the center of the pitch? Yes, they do barring no injuries. But as soon as one of the four main midfielders picks up an injury PSG will immediately be stretched thin. Perhaps if they delt Neymar and got Coutinho in return the problem would be solved! (One can hope)
PSG being thin in the midfield means Gueye is an even better pickup. I think Gueye paired with Verratti could be godly.
After reading about the Gueye's supposed move to PSG, I've been trying to think of who would start. Gueye or Herrera and I honestly have no idea. I don't see how you can bench a player like Gueye considering the season he just had but at the same time, Herrera is a solid fit. I think Draxler will start at attacking-mid but if he doesn't I think Herrera would. Veratti, Gueye, and Herrera? That sounds like it would be a lot of fun to watch. And with the attacking capabilities of Neymar (assuming he's healthy), Kylian Mbappe, Edinson Cavani, and Angel Di Maria, I think PSG could get away with playing a more box to box minded midfielder at attacking-mid. The question is do they want to? I'm confident that manager, Thomas Tuchel, will make it work.
So Gueye to PSG is not quite official yet, but he's been linked with them for quite some time now and after a fee being agreed, it seems like the move is well on its way to being official. I can't imagine how a player who finished 2nd in the Premier League in tackles last season will fair in a league like Ligue 1. He's going to feast. And I'm happy for him. It's always cool to see a player who is a grinder move to a bigger club and now he will have Champions League Football. It just stinks that he won't be in the Premier League next season.
